What are dermal fillers?

Loss of volume in the face is one of the key culprits of aging. As we grow older, our facial muscles and connecting tissue begin to sag, often resulting in sunken cheeks and temples.
Hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body, is synthetically produced as a pure product and used as a filling agent for various parts of the face.

Frequently asked questions

Dermal fillers are a popular non - surgical treatment which will add volume or plump up areas where wrinkles and folds have appeared due to aging.

Most people are suitable for dermal fillers, however you should not have dermal fillers if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you bruise easily. If you’re unsure whether or not you are suitable, our Doctors will be able to advise you at your consultation.

At Thérapie Clinic we use the world’s most tried and tested hyaluronic acid dermal fillers on the market. The safety and effects of our fillers have been used for over 15 years and in more than 15 million treatments worldwide.

The results of dermal fillers are long lasting, but not permanent. How long they will last depends on many different factors, and is different for everyone depending on factors like skin, age and lifestyle. After your initial treatment it is recommended that you come back to us every 6-12 months.

Your Doctor will run through aftercare advice with you at your consultation. But as a general rule it’s important to avoid exercise for 24 hours after your treatment. Some common injection reactions might occur after your treatment, such as swelling, redness and pain but don’t worry, these will generally resolve within 2-10 days.

It’s generally advisable not to smoke after your treatment as it can have an effect on how your body reacts to the procedure. But if you do decide to smoke after the treatment, it won’t alter your results.

Sometimes the treatment can cause some discomfort, and you may experience some tenderness afterwards. Rest assured that we will do everything that we can to keep you comfortable throughout.

Our team will be able to advise you on what’s the best amount for your skin at your consultation.

  • Following pre-treatment advice will help you to get the most from your procedure, and will help you to plan for any discomfort or reactions which you may experience, however minimal after your treatment.
  • We advise that you plan any social engagements around your treatments, as sometimes you may experience redness or tenderness afterwards.
  • It’s important too, to let us know if you plan to travel in the next 4 weeks.
  • Please also ensure that you have no cold sores, have good overall dental health, have had no recent bacterial infections or antibiotic treatment, and that you are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant.
  • If you have had dermal filler at another clinic, please let us know the brand of the dermal filler that you have previously used, and it’s important that you have had no recent skin invasive treatments in the last four weeks.
  • Finally, it’s important that you are feeling well when you come to us for your treatment, with no recent sickness.
  • Much like our pre-treatment advice, it’s important that you adhere to aftercare advice so that you keep your body safe in the aftermath of your treatment, and so that you can maximize your treatment results.
  • Most people are able to continue with normal activities immediately post treatment but you should expect to experience some redness, pin prick marks, possibly swelling, possibly bruising.
  • Please do not wear makeup for 24 hours post treatment, and do not drink alcohol. It’s advisable to avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Don't put any pressure on the area for the first week, post treatment. Avoid sunbathing, sunbeds, or extremes of heat or cold for two weeks after your treatment. These activities have been found to prolong and increase bruising and swelling.
  • It’s good to know that swelling may worsen in the first 24 hours, then settling in the first week post treatment. To help with this use cold packs . As a consequence of swelling and internal healing the product may feel harder or lumpy and you may notice some asymmetry. Your final result may be assessed 4 weeks post treatment.
  • Bruising may also take a few days to appear and up to 10 days to resolve, to help with this you can use Arnica. Avoid ibuprofen and alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising and swelling. Tenderness should settle as swelling goes down and bruising heals over the course of 4 weeks post treatment.
  • Finally, it is important not to have dental work for 4 weeks post treatment and not to have invasive skin or laser treatments in the same area for 4 weeks post treatment.
